Pokémon Go has been all over the news recently. Whether it’s in a newspaper, on the 5 o’clock news, or social media, you can’t escape it. (Even our intern Esther has found not one but two Pokémon sitting at her desk).
But why are we talking about Pokémon Go in a marketing blog? Well there are two reasons.
The first reason is that it’s trendy. A while back we had a blog post on social listening, and featured Chewbacca Mom, a popular video at the time. Paying attention to what is popular is a great way to connect with your customers and clients. We sometimes post about things unrelated to marketing, such as national selfie day or that July is national ice cream month. Because what’s happening in popular culture is important to marketing and it gives your audience a little diversity in what you post.
The other reason we’re talking about Pokémon Go is because of its use of augmented reality, which does relate to what we usually post about. Whatis.com defines augmented reality as “… the integration of digital information with the user’s environment in real time. Unlike virtual reality, which creates a totally artificial environment, augmented reality uses the existing environment and overlays new information on top of it.”
Pokémon Go is not the only app that uses augmented reality. You should consider using types of augmented reality for your business (if it makes sense and will help you achieve your goals). For example, you could make sure your business is using Yelp – Monocle, which is an augmented reality feature where you can find restaurants, bars, and other attractions shown on the camera’s viewfinder.
Quick tip for everyone out there: While Pokémon Go is most likely a fad amongst young adults, you should be paying attention to these trends, because you never know where you’ll get a good marketing idea.
