Hiring a marketing agency can help you do more with less.

Confused? Let us explain.

A marketing agency could do more for your company for less money than handling it in house.

Why is outsourcing less expensive than having an in house marketing department?

Think about what it takes to hire an employee. An employee needs a salary; according to Indeed.com, the average salary for a marketing manager is Michigan is a little over $70,000 a year. Employees also need infrastructure such as facilities and IT services, benefits, and more.

Say you wanted to go for someone lower than a manager level; a marketing specialist salary isn’t too far behind. Many earn $60,000 or more per year plus benefits and overhead.

Keeping a marketing agency on retainer may be less expensive, and less of a hassle for you. If you have your own team, you will need to decide how to split up responsibilities, manage the schedules of team members, and negotiate salaries. By hiring a marketing agency instead of a team, you avoid these additional tasks. You can also switch agencies more easily if, for example, they are not providing the results you want.

It also takes time to hire and to train a marketing employee. At H2H Consulting, it took our marketing director Kendra more than two months to train our first intern. You have to know the value of your time and if it is worth it to you and your company to hire someone new.

You also have to consider whether or not you have the skills to train them or if you need to hire someone with experience. No matter what you decide, you will still need to orient them to the company, industry, and your way of doing things. You may also need to pay for training and conferences to keep their skills up to date.

Don’t forget that not every employee can do everything.

What can your potential employee do? Can they write, create graphic designs, schedule meetings, and manage social media accounts? Odds are that they can’t do everything, at least without years of experience. An agency can bring you multiple people, skill sets, and experience for a fraction of creating that team.

Finally, if you are a business owner, you can’t forget about vacation, breaks, sick days, and more. While your agency contact may leave for vacation or take a sick day, they usually have someone to cover in case of an emergency.

How do you know when to hire a marketing agency?

In our experience, in order to be successful with your marketing, you need to be able to devote the time and energy to doing so. (PS: not everyone wants to, but you have to be willing to dedicate some time.)

It also takes a lot of time and energy to map out how you want to manage your marketing strategy. For more information on the marketing planning process, you can check out our blog.

Does running social media accounts, creating graphic designs, and blogging sound exciting to you?

If not, it may be time to hire a marketing agency to do this for you or your company.

If yes, you may want to hire a marketing agency to help direct your activities and apply best practices to what you love doing.

Is there a time to hire someone?

Absolutely! You just have to know when the right time is and make sure it is the right person. At H2H Consulting we work with several clients that need a marketing department to support their marketing lead person. It makes life easier and is only one expected cost that can be planned rather than the hiring of an entire department.

You can use the information above as a guide to figure out whether you should hire a marketing agency or hire a new employee.
